chilli germination

I sowed 6 chillies last week in Propagator; only one so far has reared its head. Are they known for patchy germination? I've not grown them before, they were free with GYO magazine

Yup, sometimes they're quick and sometimes they take ages, even when conditions are perfect  ::)

Yes some of them can take ages, I crank  my propagator right up, the cooler it is the longer they can take. What ones are you growing ?

Not hot enough perhaps?  Decent heat tends to make their germination more consistent, as well as fast, IME.

I always put mine on top of the kitchen rad to germinate. Generally fairly successful. But once germinated you have to remove them promptly or they will suffer.

i'm sceptical about the quality of seeds you get given away with magazines, you will probably get poorer germination rates.

may be worth putting another batch of seeds in

In general most pepper seeds under ideal conditions will take between 7-21 days, I currently have Padron, Cayenne, Chocolate Haberno, Jalapeno, Bhut Jolikia and Mini Bell sweet peppers on the go in heated props, sown last Sunday and so far none have popped up and I suspect the cayenne will be showing soon followed by the others. The Habs tend to be the slowest to germinate on average.

My chilies are 10 days in so I decided to have a gentle poke around today as I was getting impatient, and the seeds are sprouting they are just taking ages to get going properly.

Well I planted mine over 2 weeks ago in a heated propagator and nothing has shown. Just discovered that my OH has unplugged it to put his torch recharger in! >:(
