Has anybody grown hops in the North of England, please?

I'm interested in how it turned out for you.

This post is a precursor to getting ready to brew my own beer in a few years time.

Many thanks everybody.

Don't know about hops but the Romans grew grapes. Can't you make wine instead . . . ;)

Not as far north as you, but can't see why not.  They are very hardy.  We grow Challenger and Cascade with success.

I haven't but a friend on another allotment did. She had the plants climbing all over the place, but not sure if she got a crop.

RubyRed - I do make wine!  :D  Not enough of it, it seems! But it's nice to have a change!

Ghost61 - did you get crops? What sort of quantity per plant plus also how many years did it take to get up to speed? Thanks!

Annen - Ooo-er! I don't fancy no crops!

We bought rhizomes and they produced their first hops in the second year.  You don't need much for a brew.  For 40 litres about 20-30g of hops.  OH does the brewing sparging etc the traditional way.  I know what he would say about kits!

I have asked my friend and she says yes she grew them fine and they flowered and smelt lovely. I believe the flower part is the bit used in brewing? but not sure, she just grew them for the flower and the bees like them.

Thank you for your replies!

Could I persuade everybody on this thread to think of me for a few ounces of hops later this year (with the variety, please) and/or a cutting, super-please? All postage costs will be met!

Happy to do so, but can you remind again about september time?  I am going to try some cuttings next year as our hops are a bit young still.  Btw OH has corrected me to say you need about 30g of fresh hops for 40pints (not litres).

I'll stick to the elderflower stuff in future, I know what I'm talking about there!

Thank you; I shall try to do so. (One of my current worries is that I'm not remembering that well at the moment).

Elderflower is nice - you should try some Blackberry. When I do some later this year, I shall be offering it here. Be sure to try some, either from me or yourself as a homebrew!

Thank you again - muchly!
