Itchy fingers
« on: February 15, 2015, 09:11 »
Firstly, I'm new around here so, hello.

I have done a bit of gardening before but it is always a little hit and miss.
Any success is by good luck rather than good management  :D

I really want to "start something off" I've got Broad Beans in, Aquadulce, they were planted in Nov. and a few Japanese onions.
My garden is small so what can I start in the next week, or do I have to wait another month or so?

B r

Ah............just seen the "what to do month by month".....sorry  ::)

Welcome to the forums :) :) :)
I'm sure you will easily find something to start, especially if you've got a spare windowsill to start some seeds away on.  I've just sown my leeks and the tomato seedlings have just popped up.

Hello and welcome! Sowing times also depend on where you live and what outdoor protection you can give them as the weather which, if it's nice now, can be deceptive. With a small garden you will want as much success as possible so don't be in too much of a hurry as later sowings will catch up with earlier ones. As Annen says, you can start something inside where it's not too warm but don't let them get leggy. You could start some onion sets off in largish modules - I do this in my cold greenhouse in March so I can plant out the ones that have growth - this avoids planting those that don't grow and avoids spaces in your rows. You can chit a few early potatoes in egg boxes - give them cool conditions and a good light. If you have any deepish pots, sow some peas around the edges then, when ready to plant out, tip the pot up and unroll the rootball so you have a "row" of seedlings, or you can use a deep drainpipe to sow them in then, instead of pushing out the seedlings lengthways, tip the pipe sideways and move the lot out into a shallow trench. Good luck!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

That's a good tip GG, I haven't tried that one  :)

Hehe I had to at least try. Watch this space. Another two weeks and I'll do a load more.
