if it's like a beer trap, basically a deepish dish sunk into the soil and filled with fluid - the idea is that the smell of the yeast  attracts them but then they drown in the dish

You can also use Marmite, some would say it's the best use for it!

Yes it works a treat. In an empty 2 litre plastic milk bottle I put 1 teaspoon of yeast, 3 teaspoons of sugar and 4 teaspoons of plain flour. Fill up with warm water and shake. Quarter fill glass jam jars buried with 2cm lip above soil. I put tents over each one with old ceramic tile to keep rain out. Can get smelly if not emptied and changed weekly.
