Strawberries in flower
« on: January 18, 2015, 10:57 »
Cleaning up the strawberry bed yesterday and found that most of the plants were flowering, should I pick the flowers off to save the plants energy as they have no chance of making fruit?
Regards,
Chris

I would.

I've been growing strawb's for a while now and often I have seen - and followed - the advice to cut all the foliage back before Christmas. Then expose the plants to chill (vernalisation) without waterlogging them apparently helps the flowers and berries for the coming season.

As I say, this is what I do and it works for me.

From what little I know, newly-planted young strawbs need any flowers taking off when they first appear to help bulk them up and perform better later on.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
