Looking for a spud substitute.
« on: January 17, 2015, 17:45 »

Just tried sweet potato and as its name suggests, a bit too sweet.  Any other types of potato out there?  Yes, we're dieting.  :)   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I use mashed swede a lot when cutting down  ;) or even mashed squash, both low GI foods.

Mashed swede and carrot with some thyme is good. Or celeriac mash, celeriac and parsnip.

Or a mixture of a variety of root veg with a smidge of half fat crème fraiche and various herbs, or a squeeze of citrus.

If you are looking for mash you could mash a variety of tinned beans or chick peas.

My sister is allergic to potato and lives on celeriac and cassava (available in Eastern or European grocers)

Oca are OK roasted whole too, although quite small. If you are cutting down however that may not matter so much  ;)

Be careful with chick peas if you are on a diet - I started using them a few years ago, and my weight shot up practically overnight.  Then I read in a veg book that the ancient Egyptians used to eat chick peas to aid with weight gain   Cut the chick peas out and weight went back to normal.  Now they are an occasional treat!

Oooo er, I hadn't thought of that for the chickpeas.

I'm another yes for things like mashed Swede and carrot on their own, or on top of cottage pie etc.

Once mashed, little bit of Philadelphia light and freshly ground pepper, lovely!

If you do normal mash with leeks you dont need any butter or milk. Not a substitute but a bonus for less butter. I boil my leeks in with the spuds so its all in at the start.

Snap! I still use a tiny bit of milk for consistency but then just add lots of black pepper!

I've seen cauliflower used as a substitute, probably because it looks similar on the plate.

Cauliflower mash is what they use on low-carb and Paleo diets, so worth a try  ;)

No soy, we do have rice milk but the dietician isnt keen on us using it as it has such little goodness in for tiny people. Florence uses oat milk but Harry is off oats  ::)
