Hi everyone, I popped up here last summer thinking I could get my veg patch at home off the ground...unfortunately due to lazy labourers and illnesses that didn't happen.
So this year I'm doing it. My son is nearly 18 months old now and loves to help me around the house so this will be great for him and it'll put food on the table too!
My bed is 10 foot across some fence panels at the bottom of the garden, it's three feet outwards and two feet deep. By my calcul, to fill it I'd need approx. 424litres of growing medium. http://www.compostdirect.com/mobile/product/4-veggie-gold-compost

I want to grow potatoes(bags?), carrots, French beans(dwarf), strawberries, raspberries along the fence, pumpkins if possible (small sugar), herbs (box?) and if possible broccoli.
Can I do all that? How would it fit? I have no greenhouse but will be getting a plastic and wooden coldframe.
Thank you for your time.
Lo and Charlie.

Climbing fr beans will give you more yield in the same space.

If you sow the dwarf ones you will get an earlier crop which will leave a space for something later. The climbers will start to crop later but continue until the frosts.

Something like this for the strawberries maybe?  It's what I did with mine and kept them in the greenhouse, because we are just too windy here for it to be outside.

Darn, it went sideways!  sorry about that!

Great idea for the strains! Vertical gardening to maximise yield per sqft and movable! Ill be doing that for sure.

I might do both beans then. Hmmm...I'm going to go out later with some string and walk it out, see how much space I'm using.
Just this morning doing the recycling I thought I could repurpose tin cans... grow herbs in them in the kitchen. Ill see if it works :)

Ooh, I didn't know that, I'll give it a go as well. I did dwarf ones last year; The second sowing did quite well, but the first one turned into a soup kitchen for slugs.

Ok... I've drawn a little grid and plotted how I think it'll all fit.
Ill throw it up later and if anyone would say yay or nay to my layout I'd be most grateful.

Thanks again for the help, the strawberry and the climber bean info I didn't have and have helped me a lot :)

Ok for the life of me I can't attach a file showing my plan so i'll write it in as best as I can

---- -------- ---- Toms Toms Climb beans Climb beans Blueberries Rasp Rasp
---- Squash ---- ----- ------- Dwarf bean  Dwarf bean Carrots      Carrots Carrots
---- ------- ----- ----- ------- Salad           Salad          Carrots     Carrots Carrots

So the dashes are space, each set of dashes or plan takes 1 sqft.

Is this ok?
Thanks

Maybe the file size it too large? I don't think I'm getting an accurate picture of your layout. Did you say your bed was 10x3x2?

You can't upload files as attachments on the forum.

Perhaps take a photo of the plan and upload that instead?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I did mean photo, sorry. It's been ages and I was trying to remember whilst fending of a toddler armed with a train. :)

Yeah it's 10 long, three wide and two deep.

I would not try to squeeze raspberries into a 2' x 1' space.  They spread by underground roots and will soon take over the bed.  As for blueberries, I'm not convinced you'll get anything much from a 1' x 1' space.

The squash will take over the space you've allocated - can they trail along a path next to the bed instead of on it?

Ooh right, New info!

Ok so the rasps need work, blueberries and squash too.

I'm going to train the raspberries up but as you've said it's their roots that grow which as I'm typing this is making a lot of sense ill have to change that.

The blueberry is in a put at the moment, big pot...should I leave it there? I only bought it last year and got five berries off it.

The squash I was thinking of training it up the fence via trellis work if possible? If that's still not enough room ill have to nix the squash and fruit the bed to better suit the raspberries.

Thanks for the help!! This is what I need, if I get it wrong now ill be playing catch up all year!
