A local store is selling onion sets at 20p per bag but some have already started to sprout, is it worth a go and is it too early to plant them out, cheers Dave

What variety are they?  Autumn or spring sown?

I suspect they will be autumn sown ones then; well if you've got the space, aren't worried about mucking up a bit of rotation, and want to give it a try for 20p then no harm will be done.  But I wouldn't hold my breath about much happening!

I couldn't resist and bought 2 bags, they are radar and senshyu, according to the growing guide they should have been planted at least 5 weeks ago, but he ho 40p, Dave

The sets are now planted and I was surprised how little waste there was, Dave

You might find that they are more prone to bolt, as they had a late start and also sat in a store for months, probably in less than perfect storage conditions. 

For 20p each bag though, you could get a decent crop to eat as giant spring onions.  When you compare that to supermarket prices, it is certainly worth a punt

As far as I can tell they have been outdoors under cover since the autumn so they should be tough little so and so's, Dave
