Globe artichoke plantlets
« on: January 03, 2015, 00:24 »
I grew some lovely globe artichoke plants last year.  It was their first year so I just cut away the king buds and did not harvest last year.  The plants are quite big and not yet died back.  One of them has two sizeable plantlets growing at the base.  My question is- when is the best time for separating these and planting separately?  Do I just put the spade down between the main plant and the plantlet?

Thanks

I dig away a bit of the earth around the offshoot, and use an old carving knife so it is easier to cut the stem with just a bit of root at the bottom.

Do it when the weather warms up in Spring and then pot them up, and keep an eye on watering, 'til they're growing strongly enough to plant out.
