Are my King Richard leeks OK?
« on: December 06, 2014, 15:36 »
This is the first year that I have grown leeks. Now that this confession is out in the open I can ask what would otherwise seem a very dumb question. I still have some King Richards out in my raised beds. Are they OK to leave out in this cold weather to pick when I need or should I be harvesting them now?

Leeks will sit through whatever weather our winters can throw at them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD, I believe there are some varieties that will only tolerate a light frost.  The variety I am growing, Jaune de Poitou is one of these (the Real Seeds website where I got them from suggests lifting before heavy frosts).  I believe King Richard is a similar variety.  So I would advise Grubbypaws to lift them before the depths of winter.

In John's growing guide he says
Quote
Early Leeks
•King Richard is a very early cropping variety. It can be lifted by July from early sowings, and will stand until Christmas from a late sowings but is less hardy than some other varieties. It can be grown close together for delicious, succulent mini leeks. Awarded the RHS Award Of Garden Merit (AGM).

Thanks for this. The only way I am able to have space to grow leeks is to plant them in the potato bags once I have harvested my spuds. This year I sewed the seeds in modules and them planted them on as bags became free. It has worked really well with leeks becoming of size in a steady stream but it means that some were planted out quite late.

I used King Richard as I happened to have an old unused seed packet. I also thought that as it was an early cropping variety it wouldn’t mind having less time to grow. The leeks themselves are lovely tasting and looking.

I hadn't however realised that was less hardy. Is there a variety that would grow fast in my bags, taste good and be happy to 'sit through winter'?
