My New Redcurrant Bush
« on: December 05, 2014, 13:37 »
has arrived, and I've just potted it up, as the bed where I'll plant it, is still not ready.

It is already pruned to about 8ins, and has about 4 new shoots growing from the main stem at root level.
Do I leave these on, or are currants on a common rootstock ? ..... I can't see a join, but thought I'd better ask, in case they need to be taken off.

Hi
Redcurrants grow on their own roots and are not grafted.
You can take hardwood cuttings to increase your stock.

I have a grafted red currant cordon, and the grafting point is clear and above the surface.

My understanding is normally red currants are grown on a leg so a 6inch tall truck and then branch out from there, your meant to cut off any shoots from the ground. You can easily use them for cuttings. Obviously you can just leve it to do its thing too.

My bought ones are on a leg, as Ema says. My mum's ancient bushes are multi-stemmed from the base. Both perform really well so I'm not sure why the 'leg' form is recommended so much - maybe it's for ease of pruning/harvesting?

Thanks, all - I'm now off to Google to find out why they're grown on a leg - before I do anything drastic  :nowink:

According to Ken Muir they can be grown as bushes as well as on a short stem and as half-standards and cordons  ::)

If the pdf link doesn't work (they don't always)
just Google..

gooseberries, red, white & pink currants - Ken Muir

I've decided just to cut the middle branch out of mine, and allow the low branches to grow  ;)
