Pickled Red Cabbage
« on: November 30, 2014, 19:34 »
Hi All,
Next season we intend to grow Red Cabbage for pickling, I've never grown RC before can anyone recommend some varieties and any other tips such as when to sow etc etc.

Thanks

I sowed red drumhead the first week in March in greenhouse and
grew the plants on in a coldframe.
I planted out early May under netting and started picking late September.
I find that pests  even slugs don't attack red cabbage with the same vigour as green
cabbage.
The only problem is keeping my grown-up children from eating it faster than I can pickle it.

Ruby Red Ball.

Sowing times etc. the same, but I found that it was a denser cabbage than Drumhead and ideal for crunchy pickles.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My sowing this year was roughly the same as Syks grower, and yes, they don't have quite the same problem with slugs. They can however suffer early on from Cabbage whites if not protected properly, but at least you can see them :). Red Jewell from Dobies hearted up well this year. I like them, but an F1, so will not be in my future seed buying plans

I have grown Rouge Tete Noir from Real Seeds for the last 4 years.  It is always reliable, doesn't suffer from slugs or other pests.  It makes the most fantastic pickled red cabbage.

I've grown the Tete Noir, and it's quite small, which I like.  I have grown Fuego for the last couple of years, they're not massive either.  The Red Drumheads are good, solid ones. Marner is a good, big, solid job  :)

I like to make traditional braised red cabbage. The smell of it as it cooks is just second to none. Mmmmm the smell of Christmas. Don't forget red cabbage coleslaw. Kalibos is fine for that job

I'm not that fond of Kalibos, the ribs seem too thick to me. I grow Red Flare  ;)

The first red cabbage I grew was Fuego F1 from Johnsons seeds (a Wilkos purchase) and I was very impressed with it.  Seeds are expensive though so when I needed more, decided to try Red Drumhead and like all open pollinated types, you get a certain amount of variability but generally I've been very happy with it.

I find Rouge Tete Noir to be a bit variable in size.   I don't grow too many each year, this year I have grown four.  Two turned out small/medium in size, 1 large and 1 massive.  No idea why they should be different in the same bed. It is tasty and slugs don't seem to like it.
