The moulting hen has scaly leg now too!
« on: November 07, 2014, 23:24 »
Hi, so I'm more relaxed about my hens moulting, but the vet diagnosed scaly leg and says I need to soak her legs in surgical spirit once a week for I can't remember how many weeks.
I have to look at the other's legs to see if their legs are bad too, and treat them too of course.

I need to review the coop and aviary, but in the meantime could anyone advise me on how to disinfect it please?

Oh, and yes I need to worm them too.
do they have the live yogurt after the course of wormer?

Many thanks

Use Poultry Shield or similar for cleaning your coop. Live yogurt after wormers or avipro as recommended by Joyful. :)

As it gets better the scales will lift on the legs, do not pick at them they will bleed. They will shed the scales when they moult to be replaced with nice clean legs. It would not hurt to treat the others for scaley leg at the same time, no point in clearing up one hen to have another get it.

Great that you have a vet that picks things up with chooks  :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thanks Sassy, yes he's a real chicken man and gave me a lot of useful advice on how to improve the aviary.

May I ask how to give the wormer Flubenvet?
it says to mix 6g with 2kg of feed but I feed them layers pellets.
is it best to change over to mash in order to worm them, or is there something else?

I'm learning a lot this week!
Thanks

by feed it means either layers pellets or mash, if using pellets then add a little drop of oil to some of your weighed out pellets and shake the tub up then add the rest and shake again, the oil helps the flubenvet to stick.
You can also buy layers pellets that have already got flubenvet added.
Staffies are softer than you think.
