Foolishly I kept an Orchid away from direct sunlight.

Now it's leaves have fallen off (possibly it was over watered).

However one stem still looks good.  Any ideas on how to rescue it ?

I don't know much about orchids, but would guess it might depend on which one of the several hundreds it was.

Why don't you start an Orchid Forum? I'm sure it would attract some growers.

I do not know a huge amount about Orchids but I do have a few at home so I hope this helps a bit.
I think that Orchids do not like direct hot sunlight..mine are all on north facing windowsills and are growing amazingly well ..do not water too much just a very small amount once a week..my mum always says half an eggcup full but this obviously varies on the size of the plant.
Im not sure what can be done if all your leaves are already yellow though :(  maybe a little Orchid food may help? and when the flowering stem has finished flowering just cut it down low to the base of the plant and then it will soon grow more aerial roots and then more flowering stems if it is happy.
Good luck and I'm sure someone here will be along soon and have much better advice for you  :D

I'm no expert either (I only have one) but mine is out of direct sun but in a light place. I keep it in the bathroom as its quite warm in there which it seems to like. I only water it once a week and was told to do this by soaking the pot in a bowl of water for no more than half an hour, then let it drain before putting it back where it 'lives'.

Hope this helps.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Right,

It is normal for the leaves of some orchid plants to yellow while the plant is in bloom. The leaf will drop once it has completely yellowed.

Does the plant have a flower spike ? You can easly spot this if it does.
If it does have a flower spike relocate your plant to a sunny spot
simple rule is If the place you’d like to put your orchid is not one you would sit in all day long, choose another spot.

Water lightly once a week at the base of the orchid plant.

After three weeks, water in the base of the container may begin to collect. Test the soil of the orchid plants as well as the greenery. If it is damp do not water.

Zepherine is spot on just feeding and waiting , dont worry to much about the leafs

Sadly I did not see this earlier.
Hopefully therefore the orchid could survive ?
The leaves have all fallen off and it does still have a flower stalk so hopefully it will be ok ?

see mum now has 6 - all phalanopsis (please excuse spelling),  2 in flower and 4 not.

1 on the ones not in flower isn't looking so good,  and after reading the comment i thought it was going to look in a similar state but seems not.  this still has leaves but the are looking yellow and have to admit it looks heck of a lot better than the photo you posted.

i think she's got the in too much direct sun - but hey what do i know - i'm just the one who bought her a book (which she's hardly read) and reads up online and discusses in forums!! :x
