[Hampshire Hog]

Hi all I am fortunate to have an asparagus bed with six year old plants. Unfortunately this year couch grass has managed to invade the bed. Whilst I have removed it by hand and mulched I am aware that it will pop up again in the spring. Is spraying with glycophosphate the best preventative measure if so when is the best time to apply it??

Hi HH, I inherited a plot last November that was a sea of couch grass and there's hardly any in it now.  I spent an age digging down deep and pulling out roots that looked like thick spaghetti.  You won't get all the bits of root out the first time you dig it but keep at it, it can be done!

I'd advise trying to control it by hand. In my experience its fairly resistant to roundup..takes very careful application(s) to see some (limited) effect. Guess glysophate work best on broad leaf weeds. That's been my experience.
Dig out the roots repeatedly. You might not clear it but you'll make it manageable.

Get some of the Roundup gel in an applicator and wipe it on the couch leaves as they appear next Spring/Summer. Best done with rubber gloves so that you can hold the couch leaf steady to ensure it gets it's dose. This will need patience but it would be easy to avoid the asparagus and should eliminate the couch.
