best rhubarb - recommendations please
« on: October 20, 2014, 10:18 »
I want to put more rhubarb on the plot and am looking for 3 different crowns to give us a crop for as long as possible. I'd prefer to have red-stemmed rather than green, so am definitely ruling out Victoria.

I have a weedy Hawks Champagne (being moved out of a pot into the ground) and am thinking Timperley Early, Holsteiner and Livingstone.

Has anyone tried Livingstone? And what do you think of it?

Can't say much about the other varieties but my Timperley Early has been absolutely fantastic - I could have started cropping from it back in mid February (that  was without forcing) and final crop about a month ago.

Yes, I 2nd Timperley Early, it's the only one I've got, and as it crops for such a long time - I've not needed another variety  :D

Canada Red has very red stalks all the way up and seems to crop well.

My Victoria is red stemmed (well, maybe not right up near the leaf ...)

Timperley Early

Very pleased with mine

Holsteiner and Livingstone.

Not tried either of them. I think Livingstone is an autumn harvesting variety? (which is probably why you want it?)

Try livingstone, it's a red stemmed rhubarb that doesn't stop growing and producing stalks until the first frost. Mine are still sending up new stems or a lovely deep red colour much to the appreciation of my plot neighbours whose rhubarb stopped growing a while ago. It definitely prolongs the rhubarb season :D

I've got Fulton's Strawberry Surprise, it has a RHS AGM and apparently often wins taste tests.

I've got that as well, and it's a lovely rhubarb and produces huge stems which taste nice, but my one is predominantly green stalked despite the name.

Cheers all.  :)

Might give holsteiner a miss then and stick with timperley early and livingstone for my Christmas list - they won't be going in until next year now anyway so I have time to prepare the ground properly behind where the greenhouse will go. We would like to be eating a LOT more rhubarb, as well as perhaps making wine and definitely infusing vodka with it.

i can heartily recommend rhubarb wine. Had a couple of demijohns of it this year that were lovely - two more on the go still, hope they turn out as good.

I grow Timperley Early, Victoria, Glaskins Perpetual, and Strawberry. I have a lot of rhubarb like you I use it all the time. I would say give Strawberry a go. I got mine from the RHS and although one of their three crowns was a bit of disappointment the other two have produced big thick pink stems that are great. The Glaskins and Victoria are much greener.

Have you thought about Stockbridge Arrow, a Yorkshire bred variety which is red in colour  :)

I've never tried it but it is meant to be good. Crops at the same time as Victoria I believe.

I might add that to the list too then - will make my Christmas parcels something of a lucky dip.  :D
