Can I grate and use those instead of the apple?

I don't see why not - might need to reduce the amount a bit in case it's over-powering.

I still have a lock and lock container of it in the fridge from last year  I really fancy a warm small seasonal pastry  now

You've inspired me to make my own this year.  I've already got the bramleys as they were a gift from a colleague.  I might give her a jar to say thanks.

For once I am already ahead of the game  :) (it is probably the one and only time).
I make a couple of Hugh FW recipes. Pear, apple and ginger the other one is plum and apple. They are now a must have in the cupboard.  :)

The container hasn't even been opened  :nowink:  It may or may not get opened this year, I don't seem to have much time in the kitchen any more.  :(

Bet that plum and apple is rich  :tongue2:

They both are, but they go so well in a deep filled pie with buttery pasty topped with a sprinkle of icing sugar  ;)  :)

Here you go, I will let you at least look at it - although that is no where near as good as the taste  :)

Mrs Bee, how many 1lb jars does this make please. I once made Delias and ended up with tons of it.

I made mine yesterday with Mrs Bee's recipe.  It looks good and smells even better.  As suggested, I didn't bother putting in any suet or butter and judging by my licking the spoon, it doesn't miss the fat.

I am afraid I can't tell you that, I don't put my mincemeat in jars I put it in large tupperwear type boxes from Lakeland.

But the recipe fills one of their largest boxes.

You can never have too much mincemeat.

I only made one new lot for us this year, as I had a couple of small boxes in the overflow fridge and I thought I would use that up.

I made a huge amount for my mince pie orders and presents but they are the ones without any booze in.

The new one I made was peach and Amaretto and I made it in the summer when the peaches were plentiful and cheap.

I have made 12 dozen mince pies today, not cooked them but made them and froze them, as well as pineapple and fig chutney.

Mrs Bee, I have two very late questions. I always love mince pies, but never get friends to bring mincemeat over from the UK because of the fat. But I've just spotted your recipe and it looks absolutely fabulous.

So, my questions are:

Is it too late to make this now?

I take it I could use another type of apple? No bramleys here, but I can get Golden Delicious, Braeburns or Fuji. Would it make a big difference?

Snoop I use whatever apples I am given as like you, we don't get Bramleys. It works fine.

I have now planted a Bramley but will I ever see fruit? Might have left it too late
