¨Mumble´ our splay legged chick died overnight
« on: October 11, 2014, 08:13 »
Mumble was our splay legged chick- he was ´abandoned´ while hatching, but after binding his legs for a night he was walking the next day.  He was growing well, a lovely black speckly chicken, and suddenly became ill and died overnight- he was 2 months old.  So sad :(  The other 4 babies that hatched with him are all doing well.

This might sound daft- but it might not have been Mumble-  we have (had) 3 black chicks, one turned into a black/white speckled hen and the other two are both dark grey.  Mumble had black legs with yellowish feet-the hen that died had totally yellow legs/feet.  Can their leg colour change?  I had assumed it was Mumble as I ´remembered´ his legs being yellow, but found a video when he was hatched and he had black legs!

We have a cockerel that is mostly yellowish colour, our hens are red (hybrid) and a couple of grey hens- we have no idea as to what eggs were which.  The resulting hens are 2 white and the remaining  2 dark grey/black. We had 3 eggs from our neighbour too,  he has red hens and a couple of black hens, but no white hens.  His cocks are all black.

I wonder what breed a mongrel chicken is called?

a hybrid or crossbreed.

¨Mum´  is now in a large crate in the garage- the babies (who are much bigger than she is now, she is a small bantam) have pecked her face and made it bleed.  I will put her back with the other hens tonight once it gets dark.
She had not eaten much, she tucked into the food and water straight away.  Poor girl, she made such a good job of hatching the chicks and that is the thanks they give her!

Awww, sorry to hear about the chick Pamela, and hope 'Mum' gets better soon.  Keep an eye on her when she is back in with the flock, they may pick on her if she has been bleeding.

Another chicken died today, I think it was a male, he was all 'fluffed up' with his neck in, so put him in a large crate in the garage, just checked him, he is dead. Why they are dying I do not know, no sign of illness, it is a puzzle.
Mum went back with the other hens, who attacked her badly, so once small hens are bigger they will go with the others and the mum will go in with the big hens and mum, who is a bantam, will go in the fenced off bit.  At the moment she is in a large walk in cage at our neighbours.
Hens are evil at times
