Growing Garlic: What to do with leftover cloves?
« on: October 01, 2014, 17:01 »
I've finished planting my garlic for next season and I have a decent amount of cloves left over that I thought were a bit too "wee" for planting. The big round, robust cloves went into the ground, what do I do with the little sliver-like cloves that are left over??  ???

Bash them, pick out any obvious bits of outer or inner skin and put them in a slow-cooked recipe - either a stew or tomato sauce if you are making that. You won't notice the skins unless you are like a friend of mine who can find bits of gristle and bone in a cup of tea!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Or plant them in a clump and use their leaves in salads

I have a husband like that. If there is a hair in the dinner it is always him that finds it. I never get one, and by the laws of chance I should get one every other time. I think he must find them and put them there to torment me.

If they were bought as seed garlic they may have been treated with fungicide. It should say so on the pack.

Just put them under the meat next time you do a roast . Skins and all. Adds flavour to the gravy

Thanks for all the suggestions  :D

I'll have to take a look at the packaging to see if it has been treated with a fungicide or not. I may stick some of them in a pot just to see what they do. I've never heard of using the leaves, but I suppose if they were to produce scapes I could use those.  The ones that aren't too painstaking to peel I'll stick under my Quorn cutlets  :tongue2:

Just plant them like the big ones, the worst that will happen is that you'll get a single bulb garlic next year which is actually a lot easier to use - less peeling.

This is what I would do if space were short.
