What can I grow up a very shaded fence?
« on: September 28, 2014, 20:18 »
I have a corner of my garden which is permanently in the shade with a 6ft fence which was previously covered in ivy. On the other side is a golf course and lots of trees very close to the fence so it's always dark there. I've managed to clear all the ivy off and plan to cover the fence in thick black tarp and put some trellis or wire on it.
I know of several varieties of rose I can put there and I use rose petals for pot pourri so they wouldn't go to waste, but I'd much rather grow fruit or veg. Is there anything which would tolerate such a shady spot?

Or do I need to erect a complicated set up of mirrors to reflect light into the darkness?  ;)

Morello cherries are shade tolerant.

Redcurrants are a good suggestion.  Ours are in the garden and quite heavily shaded by a plum tree and horse chestnut and do well, as does rhubarb.   I also manage to grow salad crops such as spring onions, lettuce and herbs such as parsley in the adjacent bed, this is a little further away but gets shaded by a tall pear tree instead.

you might have to do a lot of feeding and introducing structure back into the soil - if there are many trees at the boundary, they will have been sucking  the goodness from the soil
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Have you left the ivy on the other side of the fence? I fear it will come back when your back is turned and smoother everything.

I wouldn't grow any salads as the slugs will find them in the shade.

Things that don't need to go very sweet would work like currants, morello cherries and damsons.

weirdly the ivy had grown up from under the fence, covered the top but not grown back down the back of it. So both sides are now clear. However there is a huge amount growing just a few feet away so it will make it back eventually. The black tarp should stop it growing through the slats and I'll just have to keep an eye on the bottom and snip off any new roots occasionally.
The previous tenants had done a right bodgitt and scarper job on the fence with clear plastic which has broken into tiny bits all over the garden.
