will swedes and celerac keep growing
« on: September 21, 2014, 19:07 »
Now the weather is cooling down I am wondering whether I will get anymore growth on my swedes and celerac. I cut off the outside leaves on the celerac and gave them a feed but still very small.  Thanks

Swedes will certainly keep on bulking up....at least I hope they will as mine were a bit late going in. Celeriac will stop but I'm quite happy cos mine are about the size of grapefruits. It's the first year I've managed to get celeriac bigger than a tennis ball!

Seeing some Swede (Brora) plants at RHS Wisley plant shop I bought them.
I would appreciate advice/opinions on planting these out at this time of year.
The books seem to say it is a bit late.
I am in the "souf" of England.
Surely if the RHS are selling them it must be OK?

They may make small swede if you plant them now, but they are very late...... just hope the weather stays mild til the new year.

So, even the RHS sells things at the wrong time  :(

What size are they now? I can't see how they'll get to a size worth eating unless they've already started swelling. very disappointed in RHS as this is the sort of thing that put new gardeners off. Mind you, I have seen Kohl Rabbi for sale in pots that was already big enough to eat, presumably not the case here?

Once again my celeriac is so small that they are barely visible.  I have nurtured them to death and no reward.  One more go next year and then I will have to buy them from a german supermarket in the future......

But, having switched variety of swede, I am v happy this year as they are looking good.  However, the ones I transplanted rather than left where they had been sown have produced mere carrot sized (and small ones) swedes.  I don't think they like being transplanted very much.

Thanks for the replies.

They were in the usual strip with the stronger ones up to 3" tall, but there are only roots (i.e. no "ball").

Oh well! Another disappointment? Another sharp bend in the learning curve.

We're still feeding celeriac and swede, weekly with a strong liquid feed, partly because it's so dry, and also because it's still very warm and they're still growing!

It's the same with kohl rabi, which have now taken off after sulking all summer...

Hopefully they will keep growing what liquid feed are you using.  Thanks

Hopefully they will keep growing what liquid feed are you using.  Thanks

A watering can full of comfrey tea, nettle tea and 6x tea, all diluted  to about one-in-twenty, Chick!

Goodness knows if it's the right proportions, but it seems to work!

There are so many computations of all these 'teas', that we just go and 'do it', and we haven't had a failure yet...

As an oldish Growster, I'd just suggest that if you can get nettles and comfrey, and buy a bag of 6X, then you'll be quids in by the end of the year! It's much cheaper than buying all that stuff from the garden centre, but we still do, especially with Tomorite.
