French beans no blooming good!
« on: September 18, 2014, 09:58 »
Fellow gardeners.

Help please,  have four rows of lusciously leaved dwarf beans that have been flowering over the last three weeks or so but flatly refusing to produce any fruit. Any ideas, remedies, gratefully received.

Time  :D & perhaps a cloche if it's gone a bit colder where you are.

Up to the very hot week it was chucking down bucketfuls.
There are lots of insects about but I only go there in the evening for the moment, when I suspect the bees have called it a day!

If it's too hot 32C and up for a week or more the pollen gives out and the beans won't set. Maybe it's been too warm? My second sowing of Blue Lake bush beans are producing but at a much slower rate than the sowing I did earlier in the season. I think it's due to the cooler nights and fewer hours of daylight now too.
(They'll also slow down production if a hungry deer comes into your yard and decides to munch all of the leaves off, leaving just the stalks with their bare flowers and small developing beans exposed

.

It is perhaps too late in the season for them to set beans!

Try again next year and sow much earlier as mine are now nearly finished and showing their age!

Cheers!
STOP, and smell the roses!
