How to begin?
« on: September 10, 2014, 14:43 »
Hello
I am new to this site and would welcome all information you take the time to send.
I have marked out a plot 8 x 12' which was the site of an old wooden shed. A wooden surround has been made and I have put down some plastic sheeting in case any weeds sprout.
My question is should I start to fill it with leaf mould, manure, soil or wait until the Spring?
Also what sort of thing is the best and in which proportions please?
Thanks
Annetta

I'd put down anything you can get your hands on and don't worry about proportions. Soil would be good as the other stuff need the worms and bacteria in it to help break it down over winter. Pile as much as you can onto the bed as the level will gradually sink, then you can even it off in spring. Fresh manure will be ok too as it will have time to rot down.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Unless you mean to build a deep bed - over about 15ins deep, then don't put a plastic layer at the bottom, and it would have to be punctured for drainage.
Or have you covered it just while you are working on it?
