Kohl Rabi
Aubs
Main crop spuds
Runner Beans, much prefer French for taste.  Dwarf French produce a great crop well they do if you plant the entire packet.
Carrots, love them just can't beat the fly!

Do you really need al that lettuce/

Interested to see a number of people who, like me & Mrs K, are not keen on the flavour / texture of Runners.  I thought we were in a minority of ONE :)

I'm feeling quite heartened having admitted that I don't like runners. I was wary of admitting it as it seems like  they were one of those things you had to grow - like beetroot - whether you liked it or not (I do like beetroot but no other family member does).

But it seems like I'm not the only one!  They do look pretty when they grow - but so do climbing French Beans.

Swiss Chard on the other hand - fantastic stuff - just sits there till you decide you want to pick it and tastes good.

Another one not to admit to growing in Polite Company :D

We grow it over-winter in the greenhouse and it gives us a fabby crop in the Spring during the Hungry Gap. We them chuck those plants and sow outdoors for the Autumn, as all the Summer veg starts to shut up shop.

Another runner bean non grower here...none of us like them so we don't grow them! We don't grow any beans, just don't like the squeaky texture!

We also don't grow beetroot - again none of us like it.

I'm not going to bother with Aubergines again...waste of time and effort.

I like runners but prefer the flavour of French beans.
Also I don't have a runner bean cutter anymore so they're a faff to prepare if you don't

I prefer french beans to runners to eat but runners make much nicer chutney.

I prefer runners for eating, but also grow French cos they freeze better and I can't stand beetroot bleugh!

I'm not going to grow dwarf Frenchies or short peas any more cos my back doesn't like the picking - it just means more tall ones :D
and I'm giving up on celeriac after a few years of trying  :(

Probably sums us up here! We haven't touched it at all yet, so hopefully, we'll relent about March next year...

As for asparagus pea, we totally agree! What a beautiful flower, but what an awful taste, size, shape, waste of space...

We really don't want to grow parsnips again, as we only eat about eight a year - if that!

We may grow fewer tomatoes next year, but as I've said elsewhere, if there could be a problem with blight, get your retaliation in first, grow lots, and then if you're clobbered, you'll have done yourself proud, as you'll have grown a lot and they'll have been dealt with as you want!

Also I don't have a runner bean cutter anymore so they're a faff to prepare if you don't

An old fashioned thin-bladed table knife with an ivorine handle (I hope) is all I've ever used - it's sharp enough to quickly slice tender beans into approximately 1/2" diamonds, but blunt enough to tell you if there is a bit of string which simply needs pulling off. If you find one like that resume slicing from the other side in case there is a string the other side too (if the whole bean is stringy chuck it and try another one!)

IMVHO using a shredder is the quickest way of ruining runner beans by risking overcooking them, and also guarantees they will lose most of their flavour and nutritional value if boiled rather than steamed.

+ +

Beetroot has to go on my list too - I grew Chioggia a few years ago and it looked extremely pretty but unfortunately still tasted like beetroot (I don't think I've ever recovered from eating pickled beetroot as a kid - the vinegar fumes were almost overpowering! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Runners too for me because I think French beans are much easier to deal with and taste better.

Beetroot, I don't like it (but I've never tasted it, I just know it is horrible!).
