courgette plants with no mildew!
« on: September 07, 2014, 17:29 »
This is the first year EVER that my courgette plants have not succumbed to mildew. Did i have better seeds? Am I doing something better this year or is it the good summer that we have enjoyed?

The only thing that I have done differently is sew the seeds really late; end of June when I got back from a long trip abroad.

The plants look fabulous. I am happy but confused. How can i repeat this success next year!

Me too! Although I'm growing a different variety this year so that might help.

I normally plant a second courgette plant at the beginning of July to take over once the first one has succumbed. I have rather a lot of courgettes now!!  :tongue2:

strange as mine have really suffered. In fact I am considering pulling them up already. There is very little green left to be seen although they are still producing one or two.

I think it's been good for that also- but it has been very dry or sudden shower then the sun is back out and when I hand-water, I don't get the leaves wet.....

My pumpkin and one courgette have mildew very badly.  Pumpkin already gone. The fat baby achocha has a little bit, as do 2 other courgettes.   The Romanesco courgette, the Thelma Sanders sweet potato squash, the Benning's Green Tint patty pan and the yellow courgette are completely free.   All planted out at approx the same time.   No obvious reason for the difference.

The only year I haven't had mildew was last year. It was also the only year that I frequently and regularly watered them into upended 2 litre water bottles that I sunk in next to them when planting.

This year the way they grew made it difficult to access the bottles and I didn't bother. I think I will next year though.

(Incidentally I'm lucky enough to have a decent size veg plot at home, not sure how successful this would be if you had to make a special journey to do it every day).

Last year had two plants and ridiculous amount of courgettes. This year had one enormous green courgette on return from hols and that's been it. Yellow plant has two very small and crooked courgettes! Will pull them up soon if nothing else shows

Now you mention it, no mildew. Not much fruit though either!
