Spud question

The foliage on my Desirees flopped a while back. It went yellow then new green leaves started appearing. I cut off the foliage today and noticed that small spuds had formed under the flopped stems (about 1inch diameter) and the foliage was on what looked like purple spuds.

Anyone know what causes this? Am very glad of the extra teeny spuds but haven't seen it before.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like a couple of this years potatoes have just sprouted - hence the fresh green leaves...

The weather has been funny this year. If I haven't managed to dig up all the spuds, I get a few volunteers in the same season.

But it was fresh leaves on the yellow foliage. Like it had a new lease of life - except the leaves sprouted from nodules on the stems.
