Spuds in compost
« on: August 26, 2014, 19:52 »
/I've got a lot of slug/wireworm damaged spuds - no blight though - if I chuck them in my water filled weed bin to rot are there any downsides to then adding them to the compost heap. Hallums also?
I tend to put (most) weeds into a water butt for a few months before adding them to the compost bin. Gets a bit smelly but its sat next to a nettle tea bin, so who can tell...

Cheers,
Balders

If I have any veg waste that I am not sure of, I dry it separately and then set fire to it, potatoes and all, white rot onions, chocolate spot broad beans etc.. It's not a lot of wasted compost material we're talking about over a year. I can put up with perennial weed seeds etc in my compost as they blow around the site in any case, and are easily dealt with, but potential infections are a no no.

They should rot. An alternative is to leave them out to get frosted and then add them to your heap.
