winter salad crops
« on: August 22, 2014, 09:29 »
I've failed completely to do successional sowing this year, and failed to sow hardy salad, radichio etc. Some deals around online for plugplants . As I've never grown then before, and bearing in mind my location in cool (cold?!) Perthshire, do you think these would be worthwhile planting now? Basically I'm not sure how much these plants grow once weather turns cold, which it has done recently (early even for us!).

Worth giving it a go if you can give them some protection (cloche, etc.) They don't really grow during winter, they just survive!

Also consider micro-greens and mini-veg on a window sill. No reason not to have something fresh just because it's winter.

I do mixed hardy leaves in trays in the cold greenhouse and they can keep going through winter.  I get mixture from Seeds of Italy. I had some of their lettuces growing all winter on the plot and when it snowed they were covered over but they were still good after the thaw.  You can include some spinach in the mix too. I eat it as cut and come again. Saves a bomb on bagged salad from the supermarket.  These mixtures contain chicories and endives and are really tasty

Sowed thinly in seed trays or boxes you need never be without leaves for your salad. Mmmm
