smelly coop and pooh
« on: August 18, 2014, 14:46 »
My coop has never smelled, the last few weeks it has really started smelling (it has been in the 80's with afternoon rains) so I scrapped it out really well yesterday and this morning it already stunk. Reminds me of bad dog poop smell.  I got the chickens (5 adult americianas) 3 months ago.

Today I found some poop that looked like tar with a bunch of little rocks in it. Didn't see a picture of it... now I wish I wouldn't have scraped it and gotten rid of it.

The other part is that my dog eats the chicken poop all the time - I try to get her not too but it doesn't work. Now she has horrid gas that smells rancid.

1- why all of a sudden did the coop area start to smell so bad?
2- Does the dogs smelly gas have something to what she is eating in the chicken poop?
3 - Since reading this whole thread - should I be deworming my girls even if I have seen no signs of worms?

the weather wont have helped with the smell. I use Stalosan F to help combat this - it's a dry disinfectant powder.
Lots of dogs have smelly gas (staffies are very prone to this as I know with my little Rosie) so the chicken poop may not be at fault.
Yes preventative worming really is a must.
Staffies are softer than you think.

could another creature be going in there?

are the chickens ok in themselves, any signs of illness?

how often do you poo pick/clean out and change the coop? what do you use inside the coop?
do the chickens have access to fire ash?
do they have anything to eat/drink other than layers and water?
might be a good idea to keep the dog wormed as well

I would deffo not let my dog near chicken poop. They try and eat it but you have to keep them away from it.

You just have to keep clearing the poos out of there. It might be easier if you use absorbent bedding. As well as soaking up liquids it absorbs smells too.  It's made for horses stables but it makes great poultry bedding

Aubiose (smells gorgeous), Easiebed, that sort of thing  :nowink:  It makes poo picking so much easier too

And the tar like poo's will be the cecal droppings, which smell like something from the pits of hell!  I poo pick my coop every morning, and the run gets done several times a day...if we've had warm temperatures and rain, it sometimes does get a bit smelly, and as per Joyfull, Stalosan F helps with the smell.
