Sweetcorn and mice
« on: August 14, 2014, 18:14 »
Just thought I'd share an idea if anyone else is bothered by mice eating their sweetcorn like this. I assume it's mice, as it's only the cobs that are ripped apart, although I suppose it could be squirrals.

After the first cob was hit I covered most of the other cobs with a sock and tied it around the base to stop the little critters getting in. Uncovered the first tonight and it was lovely :D, so ill effects from being in my sock for a week, although they were clean :tongue2: Next year i'll put them on as soon as the silks start to go brown as they should be pollinated by then.

possibly, but it was the mice that had my spring sown broadbeans, so i'm giving them the blame. I also have two overgrown allotments next to me >:(, so plenty of hiding places for the little blighters.

Thanks for the sock tip.  :D
The mice got my germinating sweetcorn twice, but I have seen the birds pecking at my neighbours nearly ripe sweetcorn. I will tell him to put his socks on the corn.  and see what his reaction is.

We've seen rats doing it in previous years.

And the less said about badgers and sweet corn the better....
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I might have to turn detective and buy one of those motion activated wildlife cameras to identify the culprits. Any excuse for more gadgets. Hadn't thought of rats, but may be more likely given the way the cobs have been shredded, I'll need to keep a close eye on them as I'm sure rats could make short work of nibbling through my socks as well.

Muntjac deer loved mine last year. This year I surrounded mine by chicken wire and all fine. Unlike my neighbours.... (I did try to tell him but he didn't believe  me)
