Fantastic day and shallot question
« on: January 12, 2008, 16:16 »
We spent over 5 hours at the allotment today in lovely sunshine and have cleared quite a lot more ground for planting this year. After starting with raised beds, we are removing them to give more growing area too.

My autumn planted onions and garlic are doing well but the shallots have only the tiniest hint of growth. Is this normal?
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

I normally use spring-sown varieties of shallots so can't be totally sure.  I'd say it is because shallots are a deal more tender than the other alliums so slower winter growth doesn't surprise me.

Were they over-wintering onions and shallots at all? 'cos as far as I know only those supposed to be planted this side of the new year with garlic.

Yes, they are both overwintering types. The onions are a new British type rather than Japanese.

Then you are all right, they shall pick up as days lengthen. Even the onions usually will bulb apr-may time and the shallots are slower to start. 8)

The garlic, however, is a bit too keen...
