Is this blight?
« on: July 27, 2014, 20:24 »
Just had a look at my spuds and I have seen this on a couple of leaves, could it be blight? I have to work away next week and won't be back til Friday, should I take off the foliage?

Thanks!

It looks like the start of it to me, are any of the stems blackened in patches. Try picking off all the affected leaves and see if more appear.

It's on about 10 leaves maybe out of a 3m row.

Stems don't seem too bad

It's either the effects of sun on water droplets on the leaves or blight. The areas look a bit sunken to me and am thinking of the latter. If it is, you will see a lot more leaves affected over just a few days. Have you anyone who could have a look early this week and, if it is blight, cut the haulms off? If not, you should be ok until the weekend as it won't have had time to get into the potatoes.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Almost certainly blight. The weather forecast this week is not condusive to blight developing rapidly so you should be OK for tops removal next weekend.

I managed to take the tops off before I left, I put them in bin bags. I was a bit worried as I have tomatoes in a greenhouse a couple of feet away!

I'm pretty gutted as they had put a lot of growth on top, I'm going to dig them up over the weekend and see what is left!  >:(

The variety is desiree

Elmarto, the usual advice is to leave the potatoes un dug for 2weeks once you have taken the tops off to prevent the spores getting to the crop
