Should I limit amount of squashes per plant?
« on: July 23, 2014, 23:58 »
I read that, when growing marrows, I should limit the amount of fruits to four per plant.  I was wondering, does that 'rule' also apply to Butternut Squash and Kabocha Squash?

Thanks in advance for the advice,

Floody

I was going to ask the same question !!! Apart from growing Butternuts this year I am growing some Rampicante Summer Squashes , and I think it is called Cucuzzi a curly looking thing, they are taking over my plot and I was thinking of cutting some back a bit.

Cucuzza squash do indeed grow very fast and the plants are very big - I hope you've allowed plenty of room for it  The other option is to grow it up a trellis or wind it around a wigwam  ;)

They are getting onto about 4 Mtrs long Mum's . I was thinking of having a look to see if I could at least get some of them up off the ground. They are starting to invade the Butternut Squash area, they are just covered in lots of curly fruits.

I was reading this:  "Feed the plants regularly with tomato feed once the fruits start to develop. Leave the fruits to grow on the plant and limit to four per plant."  It's at http://www.allotment-garden.org/grow-your-own/marrows.php

The old saying that if you ask two gardeners the same question you will get 3 different answers rule does come into play sometimes

I limited mine one year to 2 on the one stalk, and the wind blew them about so much the stem broke at the base and I got none!  >:(
I let them sort themselves out now. :)

It doesn't say anything about much really on the packet!  Nothing about limiting and not even anything about how you tell they're ready for picking.

Brevity is wit I suppose!  :)

I think I'll let them do their own thing...

I remember reading that some where  last year, only 4 per plant, but I just let them get on with it.  but this thing has about 10 fruits set on the plant, I only have one  plant, and the other one curly thing or Italian thing has still to set anything.I will ask my fried what is the est thing to do.
