Transplanting hybrid berries
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:20 »
My new plot, taken in February 2014, has 2 hybrid berries planted. Even tho they were under a mound of overgrown nettles, couch grass etc they have fruited well. I would, however, like to move them. Now they've finished fruiting I thought I would cut all the canes down (those canes that have fruited and next years canes) and dig the whole lot up. Is that the right thing to do? is it the right time to do it? All advice appreciated! Thanks!

No,

Cut off the canes that have fruited and then leave until late autumn wheb you can dig up and move. Then cut back the new canes to 2-3 feet. The roots can then get established as the soil cools down and be ready to send up strong new canes next year.

Thanks Nobbie!  ;) This is what I'll do. Would hate to miss out on any berries next year as they were lovely this year!

It's what I did with some loganberries and vetchberries last year and I've had a few nice ones to eat. Mind you, I did dig up one, knocked the soil off the roots and put it in the bonfire pile for 2 months before finding a new spot for it. It still survived ok, so they're pretty tough.
