Where to start!!

next year I will not...

1.  Plant my brassicas too close together so they don't grow properly
2.  Plant my outdoor tomatoes too close together so they get the blight
3.  Plant my runner beans and climbing beans three to a cane.  More plants-less crop
4.  Plant my courgettes and pumpkins too close to anything that they will smother.

Anyway you get the picture

Grow sweetcorn. I love it but the space it takes up all summer in my tiny back garden could be put to far more productive use.

Grow butternut squash. The plants take up far too much room with little yield. Half my squash rotted away and of the remaining 6, I've just found 3 have been got at by critters this morning. The only positive is that they produce a lot of green waste for my composters.

Plant too many runner beans together. I didn't realise the germination rate was so high.

Buy poundland netting. Complete waste of time and rubbish at preventing cabbage whites.

Give my dog a cob of sweetcorn as a 'treat'. He ate it all and then couldn't keep his food down. Only narrowly avoided having a major operation to remove it, after he finally threw it up two days later after a £450 vets bill :(

Apparently they can't digest it and if it gets into there small intestine it's time for a new dog

And another one

Next year I will not....

stop sowing.  I thought I did really well this year and I worked hard at successional sowing.  But, I have just taken up all my sweetcorn and its a space I could have put spring greens in for next year but I had stopped sowing too early.  So its green manure for me on that patch now.  Its all about learning isn't it.

-Leave it so late planting my tomatoes seedlings outside as lots of tomatoes now but none ripe yet!

-Be slow at sowing brassicas as not enough this year

-Leave my sweetcorn without asking plot neighbour to water while on hols

-Forget to harden off some of my seedlings before planting!

-Believe I am being given cauliflower plants (were sprouts!) Now with ones already planted, have ridiculous amout of sprouts growing!

- Grow purple sprouting Broccoli when I want Calabrese, the one that looks like green Cauliflower.

- Work as hard.  :tongue2:

- Bother with Aubergines, too finicky for my liking.

- Grow so many potatoes.

Plant 12 rows of potatoes. Really. Now the garage is full of bags of them lol.

Plant winter squash in the polytunnel. Utter disaster, completely took over, could barely move in there but any fruit? Not one!! Whereas the ones outside doing brilliantly!

Sow so few cucamelons...just had my first few and yum.

Grow spring onions, waste of time. Likewise broad beans, tasted vile this year. No more!

spent 2 hours building a willow trellis for my runner beans and then leave the new plants unprotected.
nor will I make 4 attempts at growing peas and then not harvest my crop.
I will not forget to harvest my broad beans either, if I don't want to eat them then and there I will  harvest for the freezer.

Don't give up on spring onions - It's possible and I've had fantastic results.

Good point, I've got a long row of peas that I really need to get round to picking, but been really busy on external house maintenance while the weather's dry. It's weird the way sometimes you spend so much time growing a crop and then when it's ready you can't find the time to harvest it. It's almost like the pleasure is in the satisfaction of just growing it :D On the plus side, at least I've got plenty of runner bean seeds for next year after about two meals of beans earlier in the year.

I love spring onions and grow them in three different ways - and mostly get good results.

1. - direct sowing. Make sure that the ground is free of weeds and stones. Draw a drill and sow the seeds - cover. This is the simplest way and mostly I get a good crop.

2. - start off in modules. Sow a number of seeds in each module (say about six). When the plants are about 4/5 inches tall plant out the whole module. You do not need to separate each spring onion. I have had really good results using this method.

3. - grow in a pot. I take a medium side pot and fill with good MP compost. Sprinkle with the seeds and cover. If kept in the greenhouse in early spring they soon germinate and give you and early crop. This also works well during the autumn and early winter.

Jeeesss where to start!

I will label my squashes courgettes and cucumbers and not mix them up
Not to buy rubbish compost that seedlings don't grow in
Not to bother with container tomatoes too much hard work in dry spells
Water and mulch my beans and not have the worst rust on the site
To actually enjoy my garden
Get more organised so I don't ten up at the plot without the tools/slug pellets etc
Not grow 50 bulbs of garlic
maybe retry sweetcorn, big con envy this year after giving up last year when the rats at it all
