Radishes!!!
« on: July 10, 2014, 19:25 »
Well, this year I planted Radishes & all went well until the other day, I pulled one up.
The top was there but what was under the soil wasn't good!!
More wholes than Radish???

Luckily, I'd planted 2 batches............
2nd lot looked great, nice and "normal" looking.
Sliced it open for a taste..............WOODY!!!
What did I do wrong?

We where all looking so forward to "home grown" radish on our salad plants. :(

I cant grow them at all. I tried again after seeing the great allotment programme and failed again

maybe I should just hand my plot key back into the council.  ::)

Just had a thought people say inconsistant watering what about growing them in a float tray. On top of a water butt maybe

Radish are not keen on warm weather.

I only grow them early in the year and don't bother as summer progresses.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have had poor cropping and mine are woody or running to seed. I have run out of water on the plot and have taken to ferrying 5 gallons drums each day. So the watering has been insufficient these last weeks. There is no mains supply on site so I have purchased an IBC to rectify the problem. Except we have had no significant rain for weeks now in the wettest part of the country normally.

I only bother growing them early in trays with multi purpose I normaly get a few trays to harvest before as said above it gets to hot and in my opinion it's a waste of time.
Optimism probably a gardeners best tool.

What a brilliant idea!  I didn't know you could do that with any kind of radish, I thought it had to be a special type. Mine have been poor this year - woody or slug damaged, so I'll leave the latest failed batch in, and try eating the seed pods.  Thanks for that.

Thanks, DD. I didn't know that. I've been quite disappointed with my latest batches, but this info might explain it.

I've had the same problem with bolting, I'm thinking about having another go on the last week of August. Hopefully after the most extreme heat, but enough time before cold weather sets in.

I can't work out what I have done right.  In past years I have struggled to grow them at all.  This year I haven't done anything different other than grow in a new bed, but have had lovely radishes despite the heat.  I picked some lovely French Breakfast today.  A great surprise as the leaves were hardly there, having been eaten to death by flea beetle.  I think it is down to luck as much as anything else.
