Is mildew on my courgettes stopping them crop
« on: July 04, 2014, 17:54 »
Hi

I have lots of really healthy looking courgettes the round and yellow variety. Though. They look happy enough and I am feeding them once a week with tomatorite and watering once a day (they are in containers). We have lots of flowers but no courgettes. Our garden is full of bees and butterflies so think polllination should be ok.
But I've notice some powdery while blotches on the leaves. Is this powdery mildrew and is it stopping them from cropping.

Also is it something I should worry about and try to get rid of?

Thanks

Courgettes do get mildew, and for most of the season it doesn't interfere too much with cropping, but I'm not 100% convinced that is mildew - the shapes look too regular and aligned with veins on the leaves, to me.

Have you brushed your hand against it?  Does any residue come off?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It's many courgette varieties idea of a joke - at first glance it looks like mildew but for me yours is just a normal white patterning on the leaves - when mildew arrives, as it usually does eventually, it spreads more evenly across the leaves, and if you look closely it's on the surface of, rather than in, the leaves.

If you get the chance to hand pollinate the flowers by transferring pollen from male flowers to female flowers with something like a small artist's paintbrush (cheap variety!) it can help avoid fruits not setting if the insects aren't doing their job.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I don't think its mildew the leaves on courgettes do normally have a white tinge to them.

The white dots in the first pic look a bit dodgy to me, but the other leaves with white patches are fine
