Cukes - I knew it was too good to be true.
« on: June 20, 2014, 20:52 »
I told you as soon as I started to look after them they'd die... all this week the cukes have been turning yellow and shrivelling to nothing on all 3 plants and there looks to be a definite yellow hue to the leaves.

How am I killed them - Over watering, under watering , under feeding , over feeding ? They're getting 3l per plant twice a week, one of the waterings has tom feed in at the recommended rate.

I can grab a couple of pictures if needed.

Are they in pots, growbags or in the ground, inside or outside?

Cukes don't like the stem to be got wet. If you're watering 3l all in one go, there is a possibility that you're getting water on the stem when it will probably rot.

If they're in growbags, then you've possibly drowned them, they don't like to be sat in water.

They're in flower buckets in halos. When I checked the compost in the halos this morning it was bone (and I mean bone) dry, but I can't check the compost in the pots themselves. I've been watering into the halos so the stem hasn't been getting wet at all.

Google says too much water too - but Im struggling to believe it.  but if that's the consensus I'll stop watering, be a shame to lose them now, Im just getting used to fresh cukes.

cucs seem to either like it or hate it for no reason.

mine grew really well last year, i watered them as much as the tomatoes. so i'm doing the same again this year and crossing my fingers.

mine are getting 3l per plant a day (when sunny), but they are in soil in the tunnel.

I managed 3 reasonably sized cucumbers off my first attempt at growing them until it rapidly went downhill due to a greenfly infestation!

Mine are in s/m flower buckets - on a slow drip feed (on during the day and off at night) and growing and fruiting well - so far ;)

I hope that's not put the mockers on them

Final suggestion from me: there are holes in the flower buckets aren't there?

Yep.  :nowink:  ::)

I'll leave off the watering for a week or until I see them wilting.

I've got two in the greenhouse.  One is up to the roof and the other a small shrivelled specimen.  Which has the most flowers, why the shrivelled one in the corner, five fruits on it at the moment.  Both are treated, waterered, fed exactly the same.  I give up.

Mine are looking good and ready to go into grow bags in florists buckets on monday. Will make sure dont overwater them after reading previous posts. Its my tomatoes that are looking bit yellow so presume they will improve once they are in their grow bags! x

Madame Cholet has the answer I think.  I grow outdoor ridge cukes.  The difficulty with them seems to be getting past the potting on and planting out stage.  When they are established then they seem pretty tough.  I've grown them in the soils and also in grow bags.  I've grown them outside proper and also in cold frames and also nearest the door in border soil of a green house.  Once established they seem fine.  Marketmore- good flavour good size (not too big)

The secret seems to be never to let the roots even think about filling the pot whilst their growing. I grow Burpees Tasty Green. I'll sow 8 seeds individually in 7cm pots and as soon as the roots show at the edge of the pot, plant them up into 9cm, then again and usually again before I plant them out. Even so, I usually lose two or three plants before they're in their final place.
