Old raspberry plot
« on: June 19, 2014, 07:26 »
Hi All,
On my recently acquired plot there are some raspberry plants, some are already in fruit and some not.
The whole plot was strimmed down by the council before I took it over!
How long do these plants last, they have been in at least 8 years and how can I make them produce good/more fruit?

Thanks for any advice,
Mel

leave them, they will produce more young plants each year. Cut the ones that have fruited down to a few inches at the end of the season.  ;)
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)

In the Autumn cut down to the ground any canes that have fruited, or are dead/brown.
Give them a good weed, and some Blood/Fish and Bone fertiliser.
Then mulch with manure or compost if you can.

These are the raspberry canes as of last Thursday, there are a couple of canes that are next to the far post, which were missed when the council strimmed the plot before we took it on, fruiting other than that nothing but new growth  :(

If they are Summer fruiting rasps then the Council will have cut down the canes that would have fruited this year. The new growth will flower next year.

If they are Autumn fruiting ones, but pruned late in Spring they will still try to fruit this year, but will be late.
