Broccoletto bolting
« on: June 16, 2014, 14:07 »
Hi all,

I sowed some broccoletto a few weeks back and it's bolting already...is this normal?? I've got 8 plants all sown from seed, now between 3" and 6" high and they've all bolted.

They've been well watered and they're not pot bound.

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with them, the purple sprouting, caulis and kale are all quite happy in the same conditions.

Any thoughts or are they just prone to bolting?

Broccoletto (aka Cima di Rapa, Rapini) is usually labelled as 40 days, 60, 90, 120 days - and usually grown in the cooler months.

If it's the 40 days type it is very very quick to harvest (obviously) and you pick and eat while small before the flowers open.
It doesn't grow a proper head, if that is what you were expecting

Hmmm, it was this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BROCCOLETTO-QUARANTINO-RICCIO-1200-FINEST-SEEDS-/370877968422?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item565a0cb026

So I was expecting it to be a bit more broccoli ish but it does look more like your pic MOS.

If it looks like that do I still plant it out and expect more mini shoots or has it done it's thing?

QUARANTINO RICCIO
so that is the 40 day one  ;)

What you've got is all you'll get. Sow again when it's a bit cooler, preferably direct in the soil in 40 days it's ready -there is hardly enough time to start in modules and then pot on  :D
