corn basics
« on: June 15, 2014, 10:00 »
Hi everyone,

I have some sweetcorn growing, its only a couple of inches high at the moment in pots.  I want to put it in the allotment - is there anything I should do to the ground before planting it out? Anything I should feed it with?  I've ever grown it before, so looking for lots of advice please - thankyou xx

I always put a small handful of chicken pellets in the hole, fork it in a little bit, water the hole and then plant them in  ;)

Sweetcorn is wind pollinated so do not plant in rows, put them in blocks.

Oh and how far apart should they be? My pack doesn't have any instructions - but does say they are a dwarfing variety suitable for patios  :nowink:

Agree with first 2 replies - depending on variety sweet corn will grow to at least 5' which makes them very hungry plants (they don't like the cold either, but you can't do anything about that if it happens.)

A few canes and horizontal stringing surrounding and diagonally through the block of plants will help them stay upright, especially if you are growing a tall variety on a windy site.

I see yours are described as dwarf Snoozie - what variety are they? (still think it's unlikely they'll be less than 5')
15-18" spacing is often recommended, although I usually push that to 12" with the shorter varieties.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If they're only a couple of inches high at the moment, I'd let them grow quite a bit more before planting out, otherwise they risk being slug food ...  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
