Chick Poo
« on: June 06, 2014, 14:23 »
All of my 3.5 week old chicks poo looks like brownie mix. I have them in a brooder at night w/ one heat lamp pretty high above to keep at 85 degrees. During the day I put them in a part sun/shade run and have been for about a week. It's warm and sunny here in GA (mid 80s) right now. They have plenty of water & feed at all times. I give them probiotics & electrolytes every other day. I started giving them dried mealworms and they are on unmediated chick starter. All were fully vaccinated. They are perky and no signs of illness just molasses looking poo that started last night.  Normal or do I need a vet? Thanks for the feedback!

I've moved this to the Hen House as you were not getting any answers in the Poo Guide topic.

Chick poo is like a mini version of an adult hen's poo, with the exception that no lining is shed. Is there a reddish tint to the poo? It may be an early onset of coccidosis or they are eating something that doesn't agree with them. Try cutting out the mealworms for a while and keep them just on the chick feed for now and when you put them outside, cover the floor so they can't pick up anything "freerange". If they look perky enough the only way to try and discover what it may be is by eliminating enviromental/feed factors.

Keep us posted.

why the probiotics and electrolytes?
I give chicks just chick food and access to water.

I've twice raised chicks indoors and each time they had a mix of normal looking poo and "molasses" . I only fed them chick crumb and they all thrived and grew into adults, so I wouldn't worry if they seem lively and healthy.
