Hi,
The Onion sets that I planted in late September for early Summer harvesting were called Japanese Onions. Anyone know why they are called Japanese? Also I have been told that when harvested they don't store anywhere as long as the traditional spring planted varieties, why is this?

A hardy type of onion, originates from somewhere in Asia, why called Japenese, I don't know.

They are not good storers but as they are ready in the beginning of the summer they also have a harder hot time to store in. But they do last the summer, thank god.

And that's the reason to grow them for, really.

Can only assume they originated in Japan!

As for storing, the flesh I find is not so dense as the later onions, having a more spongy texture. I would think this affects it's storing qualities.
