Potato Problem!
« on: May 22, 2014, 17:05 »
Hi All! Spotted some of our Maris Peer looking a bit poorly today, I don't think it's Blackleg  but it looks like something called Rosy Rustic moth which apparently occurs in new ground, it's not new ground (had onions in it last year) but it has been manured since then. Iv'e dug up the affected plants bagged and binned them. Any help would be appreciated, Ta, Ian.

Do you have any caterpillars for ID please?

Rosy Rustic Moth can attach potatoes sometimes but usually feeds on the tap roots of plants such as dock etc,, so seeing a caterpillar will help. It is ait early for them to have pupated I think

Could be cutworms.  They chew stems at ground level.

Hi Sunshine! I didn't see any caterpillars, but it's the only thing I can find that looks like these stems do, there were some very slim white wrigglers in there but they moved so fast I lost them in the soil, the stems are hollowed out just above and below soil level. Thanks again. Ian

Thanks aunt S, I just googled cutworm and I'm not ruling it out but I don't think so, they look quite noticeable and the damage is over quite a lot of stem and the stem seems hollow, I'll have another look tomorrow but keep  the suggestions coming, much appreciated. Ian

It's definitely not blackleg, is all the assistance I can offer!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, all the rest of our plants look fine, it was just three or four that looked sick, the seed looked OK, so I'm just going to keep an eye on the rest. I have another spud related topic to post tho. so I'll start a new thread. Cheers, Ian

Those wounds look quite old. They may have been there some time but not broken until the recent storms flapped the tops about.

Could just be slug damage.
