Strawberry runners
« on: May 21, 2014, 17:10 »
I am presently growing 'new' strawberry plants this year on the allotment in raised beds. I've noticed today that many of these new plants are putting out runners. Now quite long. Bearing in mind they are new plants should I be 'pegging' these down and start NEW plants?

personally i never let runners from 1st year plants take root - instead they get snipped off. I'd rather the plant put it's efforts into getting stronger for it's second year.

Spend ytd: £293.44 (setting up plot 29 has been expensive) Harvest ytd: £163.93 (as at 8/8)

I do the same. When they are 3 years old and due for replacement, let them produce runners, say 3 good ones  to a plant then cut the rest. Peg them down on a small pot of compost half buried in the ground, and when they take root, cut the runner and remove the new plants. Bring them on and transfer to a completely new bed.
