garlic and onion Collars

Old boy suggested putting cardboard collars round my onions and garlic. Anyone tried this and got any comments?

what's the purpose of the collars, according to your old boy? I've never heard of this, but if there is a particular reason ...

to stop weeds from growing round the garlic or onions

Probably onion fly, I never bother.

I don't think I would bother either unless weeding is really hard for you?
