Bean Weevil
« on: May 10, 2014, 17:48 »
Hi,  My broad beans this year have suffered from the weevil munching the edges of the leaves and the larvae munching the main stalk  below ground level thus causing the plant to fall over!  Never known this two-pronged attack before with such severity.  Can anybody suggest a remedy or treatment to get rid of this pest.

Gill.
I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

Nematodes are often suggested, although I'm not sure whether they are available for pea and bean weevil.  I haven't previously heard of it attacking stems; are you sure that's what the pest is?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Some of my peas have nibbled leaf edges so do I take it the weevil has bee at these too? If so what should I do?

If your plants are not very tiny and just bite marks round the edges of the leaves they will be ok. I have one row of peas that have minimal damage, but one row that have been chopped to their death.

As Yorkie says they don't usually attack the main stems - so wonder if there are 2 different pests at work here

I think it depends how mature the plant is as to whether or not weevil munching will affect the main stem.   Some of my directly sown Sutton's Purple Podded were so badly affected they have had their chips.   I am going to sow some in pots and plant out at a later stage to fill the gaps.  I also wonder if different varieties are either more susceptible or resistant.  I am also growing Lord Leicester and treated these the same as the SPPs, but they have come through the attack with no need for replacements.
