How many french beans to a pot?
« on: May 10, 2014, 12:30 »
I am growing 7 different types of French beans, an idea I got from on here, apparently it's nice to have a good mix on your plate.

Roughly how many seeds to a pot please, to start them off?

Susie

PS.  One variety per pot, I'm not mixing them in the pot.

How big are the pots?
Are you intending to grow them to maturity in the pots, or are the pots just to get them going before planting out?

For some white Serbian pole beans I use the bottom of plastic milk bottles. They are 1 litre each. I put 5 beans in each, which then get planted out as 1 clump per cane

I wasn't very specific.  I can use any size pot, and to grow on outside.  I like the idea of 5 beans to a pot and plant as a clump.  Thanks.

I put one bean in a pot and plant the pots 6 inches apart. The problem I find with having multiple plants in a pot is that you end up with them all growing into each other making it more difficult to pick the beans.

However, I've also go some "Nautica" beans and the germination rate seems poor so I put more beans (2/3) to a pot and thin them out.

pot? i just poke holes and plant them straight out. 350 odd plants planted at the allottment so far. I mix them and then its one to a hole 4-5" spacing, 8 to 10" between rows, hoop over the top with split cane (seems to fool the birds into thinking its netted over).
simple.
last year I mixed all my beans and peas like this and did really well.

I suppose it depends on your soil. Mine's solid. Nothing directly sown seems to stand a chance (except dandylion). All of the people around with heavy duty rotavators soak the ground for a few hours before trying to dig it and if I leave clumps to dry out, it requires a pickaxe to break them up. Almost everything gets grown in pots so that they're big enough to cope.
