I've used canes for outdoors for the last few years, but this year Mike has built me an outdoor trellis type thing (pics in my diary)

Ref soil, we have about a foot of good topsoil, then heavy clay. So lots of muck or compost gets added to give everything a fighting chance.

Spend ytd: £293.44 (setting up plot 29 has been expensive) Harvest ytd: £163.93 (as at 8/8)

i've used canes and netting before but a trellis seems like a better idea  and bit more sturdy , just pricey to buy

We made our out of bits of wood and old fencing that we had lying around on the plot. We used old Galvanised Steel fencing and some bits of wood. If you can get to an Aldi they have 15m of Galvanised wire for 99p at the mo, so you could fashion some sort of trellis arrangement out of that and attach to two wooden poles. (They even have some wire cutters for £3.99 that cut it)!

Last year I used some wire wound round  the frame of an old greenhouse shed cloche that has sides about two feet high, and trained the cucumber plants along the length of it once they got that tall.

Worked really well as they hung down nicely along it, stayed clean and were easy to pick
