I'd just like to post these for the record, so in years to come I can remember I managed to grow them once. They are by far the most healthy cukes I have ever grown.
I have done absolutely
everything you're not supposed to do with them, I started them far too early, every time I've potted them on I have buried them deeply, they've stood in trays of water in sodden compost and I've poured water all over them in direct sunlight.
Normally I coddle them, treat them with care an attention and they end up looking like picture #2 which was last years plant of the same variety, shortly before it joined the choir invisible
